چکیده

The fluctuations in freely suspended smectic-A films have been studied using specular and diffuse X-ray scattering. Such films thin layer-by-layer above the bulk transition temperature of the smectic-A—nematic phase transition. The electron density profiles obtained from specular reflectivity demonstrate that thinning originates from nematic layers being expelled from the interior of the film. In addition, using diffuse scattering the spectral dependence of the displacement—displacement correlation function could be measured down to molecular dimensions, with a (2#2) scattering geometry at a synchrotron source. At long in-plane length scales the fluctuations of the smectic layers were found to be conformal; i.e. top and bottom of the film fluctuated in unison. However, at increasing wave vector transfers, conformality was progressively lost. ( 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Coherent Soft-X-Ray Dynamic Light Scattering from Smectic-A Films

We have used coherent soft-x-ray dynamic light scattering at the Bragg peak to measure the thermally driven layer fluctuations in freely suspended films of five different smectic-A liquid crystals: 4O.8, 7O.7, 8CB, 8OCB, and 10OCB. The measured relaxation times at a scattering wave vector corresponding to the interlayer spacing (2pq21 ø 30 Å) ranged from 2 to 60 ms for films from 4 to 50 mm thi...

Thermal Fluctuations of Thin Wetting Films on Disordered Solids

We consider thin liquid layers which completely wet nonideal (either rough or heterogeneous in composition) solid surfaces. Two different sources of fluctuations of the liquid surface are identified, and the competition between them is investigated. For thick enough films (but still in the submicrometer range), the liquid surface fluctuations are dominated by thermally induced capillary waves. ...

Coherent X-ray scattering and speckle pattern of solid-supported multilayers of surfactant bilayers

Charged surfactant bilayers deposited in thick multilayer films and swollen in vapor or in solution have been studied by coherent x-ray reflectivity. We report a pronounced static speckle pattern which persists under conditions of full hydration, despite the fact that the bilayers are fluid, relatively soft, and consisting of soluble amphiphiles (DDABr). Characteristic of the macroscopic domain...

X - ray - induced thinning of 3 He and 3 He Õ 4 He mixture films

Films of isotopic mixtures of helium have been studied using x-ray specular reflectivity techniques. In contrast with superfluid He films, x-ray exposure causes a reduction in the thickness of He films above the superfluid transition as well as films of pure He and He/He mixtures. One proposed model that could account for this effect is a charging model, in which thinning is caused by electrost...

Dynamic correlation functions for finite and infinite smectic-A systems: Theory and experiment

In this paper, we present the dynamic layer displacement–layer displacement and the dynamic densitydensity correlation functions—both for smectic-A systems in the thermodynamic limit, and for real smectic-A films that have finite size, nonzero surface tension acting at the two free surfaces, and nonzero layer sliding viscosity. We also present the results of our soft-x-ray photon correlation sp...
